The Anti-Caste Library: Literature, Films & Archives

The Anti-Caste Library: Literature, Films & Archives

Compiled by @sushrut_01

This library is not ours. Every film, every article, every channel and every shop listed here was found, checked and written down by one person, @sushrut_01, who then made it public so that nobody would have to start from zero.

That work matters. Most people who go looking for anti-caste material online hit the same wall: a few famous names, a lot of noise, and no map. A compiler solves that quietly and without credit. So the credit goes first, in full, and stays attached to this document wherever it travels. If you share this list, share the name with it.

What follows is that original compilation, reorganised for reading rather than for a spreadsheet. Nothing has been dropped, nothing has been rewritten, and no link has been replaced with a "better" one. The only additions are the section headings, the source and author names visible in the links themselves, and the reading paths below.

How to use this library

There are more than three hundred and thirty entries here. Reading it top to bottom is not the point. Pick a door and walk through it.

IF YOU HAVE ONE EVENING

India Untouched (documentary)
Start here. Everything else in this library assumes what this film shows you.

Untouchability in India: A Reading List
A curated entry point into the scholarship, from Economic & Political Weekly.

The Dalit-Bahujan Guide to Understanding Caste in Hindu Scripture
Where the system claims its sanction.

IF YOU HAVE A WEEKEND

Watch Fandry, Sairat or Kaala. Then read the section on caste in cinema and see the same films taken apart by Bahujan critics. The gap between what a film shows and who gets to make it is the whole argument.

IF YOU ARE BUILDING A SYLLABUS, A READING CIRCLE OR A STUDY GROUP

The Articles section is grouped into fifteen themes, and each entry keeps the number it carried in the original compilation, so you can trace anything back to the source sheet. The reading lists and resource kits theme is the fastest way to hand somebody a starting bibliography.

IF YOU WANT TO PUT MONEY WHERE YOUR READING IS

The Bahujan-owned bookshops, publishers and studios section is at the end. Buying an anti-caste book from an anti-caste publisher is not a small act.

One hundred and forty pieces, grouped into fifteen themes for reading. The number in front of each entry is the number it carried in the original compilation, so anything here can be traced straight back to @sushrut_01's sheet. Author and publication are shown where they were recorded or are clear from the link.

A few links point to AMP or mirror versions of a page. They have been left exactly as compiled rather than "corrected", because a working mirror is worth more than a tidy URL that has since moved.

6. Videos, interviews and reportage

The compilation kept a second, separate video collection alongside the films. It runs to interviews, lectures, music, testimony and on-the-ground reporting. It is grouped here into nine themes. A handful of titles overlap with the films section, which is how they were recorded and is left as is, since the same film can be both.

7. Bahujan-owned bookshops, publishers and studios

Books, publishing houses, clothing and design, all run by people from the communities the rest of this library is about. Anti-caste publishing survives on direct sales. This is the part of the list that turns reading into support.

2.  Samyak Prakashan - Books

3.  The Shared Mirror

4.  Panther Paw Books

5.  Jai Bhim Store

6.  Bahujan Store

Editorial notes on the links

This document reproduces the compilation in full. Four things are worth stating plainly so that nothing looks like an error on the compiler's part or a silent edit on ours.

Nothing has been removed.
Every entry in every sheet of the original file appears here. Where the same resource was listed twice in the same section with the same link, it appears once, and where the same film or video appears in two different sections, it has been left in both, because it was recorded that way.

Two links appear to carry a stray character from the original paste.
The entry for Narayan Meghaji Lokhande and the entry for the anti-caste movement in Pakistan both end in an extra letter. They are printed here exactly as compiled. If a link does not open, trim the final character or search the title.

AMP, mirror and mobile links have been kept as given.
Several publications have redesigned their sites since this list was made. If a link fails, the title and author are enough to find the piece again.

Platform availability changes.
Films marked as available on a streaming service reflect where they sat when the list was compiled.

The selection, the sourcing and the labour of finding all of this are entirely theirs. Unify the Lit has only arranged it for reading and published it so that more people can use it.

If you add to this library, credit the compiler. If you find a broken link, fix it and pass the corrected list on. A reading list is only alive as long as somebody keeps carrying it forward.

Jai Bhim.
